Episode #76: What You'll Want to Know About Having a Baby in the NICU with Dr. Terri Major-Kincade
I'm not kidding when I say that I wish I had the information in this week's episode twelve years ago. My first daughter was born premature and had to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit (AKA the NICU or the ICU nursery). It was an incredibly challenging time, and having a baby in the NICU is tough whether you are expecting it or not. This week's episode has all the information I wish I'd known then, and I am so happy to be sharing it with you.
Today we're joined by Dr. Terri Major-Kincade. Dr. Terri is a practicing medical doctor and champion for premature babies and their families. She is board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatology and a pioneer in the field of neonatal palliative care. You'll hear just how dedicated she is to giving hope to families who have to spend time in the NICU.
Dr. Terri and I start off talking about what the NICU is and why you should know a bit about it even if you don't think you'll have to spend time there. We talk through three of the main reasons babies are admitted to the ICU nursery, why it is so necessary to greive the loss of the birth and postpartum period you expected to have, and what you should remember as your baby goes into the NICU.
We also talk about what parents can do to advocate for themselves and their baby, what kind of emotional support is available for NICU families, and five questions you can ask your care providers weekly so you are on the same page about baby's medical care. And finally we talk about life after the NICU and what to do to minimize the chance your baby will be readmitted.
